This chapter discusses the techniques for enhancing the performance of visible light communications (VLC) systems. It begins with the introduction to a parallel data transmission technique that helps to increase the system transmission capacity. This technique exploits parallel data transmission using multiple light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that are generally used in homes and offices for lighting. Parallel transmission is based on multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications systems where the VLC channel matrix is predetermined to separate and recover multiple data streams.
