L’Australie a déployé depuis environ 20 ans le système de classement « Meat Standards Australia (MSA) » pour prédire la qualité en bouche de la viande bovine afin de mieux satisfaire les consommateurs de viande. Plus de 3,1 millions de bovins ont été labellisés MSA en 2017-18, ce qui représente environ 43% des abattages nationaux de bovins adultes. De plus, 94,3% des bovins candidats pour le classement MSA répondaient aux exigences minimales du système. Le « Meat Livestock Australia » a également mis au point l’index MSA, qui indique le potentiel qualitatif de la viande pour la carcasse dans son ensemble.
