The control of fungal epidemics by the use of genetic resistances occupies a central place in my journey as a researcher. As an epidemiologist, I am studying the biology and population genetics of the fungus causing blackleg (Leptosphaeria maculans) in relation to the efficacy and stability of oilseed rape resistances in agro-ecosystems. As a backbone for my HDR manuscript, I propose to travel along this journey, showing why the use of the concept of "epidemics" was locking our conceptualization of epidemiologists, focussing the work on the scale of the field during the cropping season; and then how my work on natural populations (of snails) allowed me to enlarge my vision of agronomist.
