Introduction Information processing in the brain relies on the release and diffusion of neurotransmitter molecules across the synaptic cleft and on functional coupling to postsynaptic receptors, which in turn depends on the receptor plasticity. Here, we investigate the functional interplay between the major excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate (Glu) as measured by 1H-MRS and the density of the metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 5 (mGluR5) assessed by PET.
