An efficient direct functionalization of light alkanes is highly desirable to achieve a more sustainable raw material usage in chemical industry. Our knowledge of heterogeneous selective alkane oxidation catalysts is still largely based on empirical concepts. There is growing evidence that in addition to the traditional (local) concepts the underlying bulk electronic structure should be considered.
