In ǂ’Amkoe (a Kx’a language), palatalization of non-click stops is only found in the West ǂ’Amkoe varieties Nǃaqriaxe and ǂHoan, while the East ǂ’Amkoe variety Sasi does not have palatal non-click stops and uses alveolar stops instead. A similar situation is found in the neighboring language Gǀui (a Khoe language): while the varieties in the southern part of the language area palatalize non-click stops, the variety spoken more to the north does not. The present paper looks at the areal distribution of palatalization in ǂ’Amkoe and its neighbouring languages and compares it to the respective related languages.
