Investigation of growth kinetics of mixed cultures is rarely subject in microbiological research. A major reason is the lack of appropriate analytical tools for single species quantification. Nevertheless, however, there is a basic interest for a better understanding of growth characteristics in microbial mixed cultures in various research fields. We are investigating a mixed culture consisting of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Burkholderia cepacia and Staphylococcus aureus as a model system. All three strains are well-known to be opportunistic infectants and can occur as mixed culture in the lung of cystic fibrosis patients.
