Abstract The main characteristics of the groundwater biotope are described, especially with respect to their effects on the structure and function of its biocenosis. Priority is given to the situation in pore aquifers, for joint and karst aquifers the description is in some respects only of limited significance. The narrowness occurring in most aquifers excludes many organisms from colonization because of their size. The darkness of the subsurface results in a specific food web dominated by microorganisms, where metazoa occur only in oxygen containing areas with sufficiently large interstices and which is dependent on the supply with organic matter from the surface.
