The temporal lobe of the primate brain is thought to be important in high-level object recognition and learning. In contrast to electrophysiological studies, fMRI has the advantage that it allows simultaneous mapping of the functional organization of multiple cortical areas. However, there are few fMRI studies of the inferior temporal lobe in the non-human primate, because gradient-echo echo-planar-imaging (GE-EPI), which is commonly used, suffers from susceptibility related signal losses due to the ear canal and the cancellous nature of the temporal bone.
