In this introductory article of the special issue of Brain Research , we first present an overview of some general questions relating to cognitive control. For instance, one of the questions that remain to be answered is what control mechanisms and their neural underpinnings really ‘ do ’ , beyond what is done by more basic ‘ computational ’ or data processing systems in the brain.
