Ayi Bahtiar: Optical Waveguides of Conjugated Polymers for All-Optical Switching Devices We have studied and compared the linear and nonlinear optical properties of thin films and planar waveguides of several new solution processable derivatives of poly(pphenylenevinylene) (PPV). We have found that MEH-PPV is the most promising candidate for an integrated all-optical switching device because it shows a superior combination of large third-order nonlinearity, ultimately low waveguide propagation losses and sufficient photostability. We have measured the dispersions of waveguide propagation loss αgw, nonlinear refractive index n2 and nonlinear absorption coefficient α2 of MEH-PPV waveguides in the range of 700 - 1600 nm.
