After school programs are explored as a venue for providing physical activity for children. The research reviewed points to multiple benefits of regular physical activity for children, including weight management, academic and social support, with a primary focus on prevention and decrease in rates of overweight in children. Policy development tools to support such programs and program planning strategies are discussed. In addition, current models of physical activity in after school programs are reviewed. Increasing levels of physical activity in children via after school programs designed to meet the needs, interests and abilities of all students with the ultimate goal of developing life long interests and improved health is supported.Mas...
