Intimate Partner Violence in Zambia: Patterns, Determinants, and the Way Forward

Intimate partner violence (IPV) threatens the health of women around the world. The 2013-2014 Zambia Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) indicates that 47 percent of ever-married women age 15-49 have experienced some form of violence perpetrated by their husband or partner. A number of factors are associated with higher odds of violence, including expression of approving attitudes towards wife-beating, which is also linked to lower levels of education. Women with higher than secondary education are more likely to report abuse to professionals. Promoting education and economic development in Zambia will likely lead to reductions in violence, and will also improve the lives of individuals and families across Zambia, but further action still needs to be taken to eliminate intimate partner violence.Master of Public Healt
