The Perinatal Community Health Worker Training Facilitator's Guide

Mamatoto Village is a community-based organization in Washington, DC that specializes in training perinatal community health workers who provide perinatal and birth support to women in the community. The agency is focused on providing culturally relevant care to women of color in the DC metro area. The majority of the women who are served by the organization are referred through two Medicaid managed care organizations. Research highlights that women who have birth supporters, such as doulas, have improved birth outcomes in comparison to those who receive regular care. To address the maternal and child health disparities in DC, Mamatoto Village uses the perinatal community health worker model. By combining perinatal home visiting and birth support services Mamatoto Village offers collaborative, culturally relevant, wrap-around services during the perinatal period to women in the community. They agency also is building capacity with the community by providing a workforce development program through the perinatal community health worker training program. Mamatoto Village was the field placement site for a dual degree Masters of Public Health/ Social Work student. Over the summer, the student created powerpoints for their training, program survey forms, and developed a facilitator's guide.
