Application of a Dynamic, Mechanistic Model of the Fenton Reaction for Destruction of Micropollutants in Water

A mathematical model describing oxidation/reduction reactions inaa dynamic liquid phase reactor has been applied to the Fenton Reaction for water and waste water treatment. Currently there are very few mathematical models available to describe the Fenton Reaction for waste water treatment, and the development of a mechanisticly based model would greatly aid in the understanding of the factors involved in the Fenton Reaction. The system of chemical equations making up the Fenton Reaction is laid out, and presented in terms of a set of partial differential equations describing the change in concentration of a micropollutant in a flow-through reactor. Both plug-flow and completely mixed reactors are discussed. The sensitivity of the model towards various input parameters is discussed, particularly reaction rate between the hydroxyl radical and the target micropollutant, influent pH, reactant concentration, retention time, and effect of liquid phase dispersion coefficient. Although no database is available to test the model, model predictions appear consistent with observed trends in actualsystems. Optimum reactant doses are found for different pH levels, and the effect of differing Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratios is illustrated.Master of Science in Environmental Engineerin
