Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most commonly recognized gastrointestinal diagnosis worldwide. It affects roughly 11% of the population and has a large financial impact, as well as a significant impact on quality of life. This paper will review the clinical presentation of IBS-D, describe the proposed pathophysiology of the condition, and discuss current treatment modalities, questioning whether these treatments address the underlying cause of the disease and whether the course of treatment will improve quality of life in the patient. Finally, this paper will present recommendations for the best approach for IBS from a dietetics perspective.Master of Public Healt
