The Influence of the Singer in Baroque Opera: The Case of Faustina Bordoni (1697-1781)

This project explores the question of how singers affect composition. Over the past year, I have analyzed the role of the singer in the production process of operas during the early 1700s, specifically by following the career of Italian soprano Faustina Bordoni. Composition is sometimes thought of as an isolated act, springing solely from the whims of the composers themselves. However, in this time period, as in others, singers held remarkable influence, and the music they sang was adapted to their abilities, social and political standings, and desires. Especially considering that not many women are present in these chapters of our music history textbooks, this thesis and its associated lecture-recital aim to demonstrate that female singers in particular were a vital part of the music scene and a powerful force in the creative process.Bachelor of Art
