Improvisation is often regarded as a central, constitutive, and even defining element of jazz, and as a result it has figured large in jazz studies. This chapter sets out to explore the contingency of improvisation, looking at how it has been figured by different discourses on jazz. In doing so I trace the ways a range of different literature has considered the idea from historical, analytical, cultural, and other perspectives
