Trace et mémoire du trauma : de la mémoire du corps à la mémoire symbolique

International audienceObjective : This article presents a reflection, at the meeting point between psychoanalysis, philosophy and art, on the relationships that the construction of memory entertains with different forms of the trace of a traumatic event. The interactions of psychic and physical, material and symbolic traces of the trauma are analyzed to understand their vicissitudes and possible elaborations, at the articulation between the individual and the collective.Method : Starting from an analysis of the psychic processes mobilized by the trauma, the enabling conditions and the issues at stake in the work of memory for the person's subjective and social life are examined. The concepts of trace, memory, oblivion, repetition and remembrance are explored in the light of a documentary film by J. Oppenheimer on the Indonesian massacres of 1965 and texts by J. Améry and I. Kertész referring to the Shoah.Results : The traumatized subject suffers in his body from the incessant return of physical and psychic, fragmentary and haunting traces, which often do not deploy as a remembrance as such. Memory is a diachronic process that selects, arranges and transforms traces into a subjectivated remembrance on which the subject can rely to survive trauma. Writing is a particular form of elaboration of the trace: it stages the possibility of the shift from a somatic inscription, “in the flesh”, of the traumatic event that undermines the psyche, to a symbolic and exosomatic inscription. Writing enables a rewriting of experiences on the very limits of possible experience, and of what, having marked the body, nevertheless leads to the difficulty, if not the impossibility, of telling and representing that experience as history.Discussion : The elaboration of memory cannot be considered as a strictly individual process. In the ordeal of the elaboration of remembrance, the subject of the trauma cannot be left aside by the other. The work of memory thus always implies a discursive construction of remembrance that calls for examination. In this sense, the archaeologist, the historian and the therapist in some instances provide the conditions that enable this construction, and in other instances question it. Nevertheless, most of the work of memory consists, from the point of view of the therapist, in the successive positions that the subject adopts towards remembrance at each recall.Conclusion : By way of writing, the work of remembrance engages the subject, through his bodily drives, in a construction of the trace that can enable him to preserve his integrity in the face of the disaster. In this way he can remember, not so as to “forget”, but to relieve himself of having to bear alone within him the traces of the traumatic unrepresentable.Objectifs : L’article présente une réflexion au croisement de la psychanalyse et de la philosophie sur les rapports que la construction de la mémoire entretient avec différentes formes de la trace d’un événement traumatique. Les interactions des traces psychiques et physiques, matérielles et symboliques du trauma sont analysées pour comprendre leurs destins et élaborations à la charnière de l’individuel et du collectif.Méthode : Partant d’une analyse des processus psychiques mobilisés par le traumatisme, les conditions de possibilité et les enjeux du travail de mémoire pour la vie subjective et sociale sont examinés. Les concepts de trace, de mémoire, d’oubli, de souvenir et de répétition sont articulés à la lumière d’un film documentaire de J. Oppenheimer sur les massacres de 1965 en Indonésie et des textes de J. Améry et d’I. Kertész faisant référence à la Shoah.Résultats : Le sujet traumatisé souffre dans son corps du retour incessant de traces physiques et psychiques qui peinent à s’élaborer en souvenir. La mémoire est un processus diachronique qui sélectionne, agence et transforme des traces en souvenir subjectivé, sur lequel le sujet peut se soutenir pour survivre au traumatisme. L’écriture est une forme particulière d’élaboration de la trace : elle met en acte la possibilité du passage d’une inscription somatique de l’événement traumatique qui ébranle le psychisme à une inscription symbolique et exosomatique de celui-ci. L’écriture rend possible une réécriture de ce qui a été vécu aux limites de l’expérience possible, de ce qui ayant marqué le corps impose cependant la difficulté, si ce n’est pas l’impossibilité, de dire et de représenter ce vécu comme histoire.Discussion : L’élaboration de la mémoire ne peut pas être considérée comme un processus strictement individuel. Le sujet du trauma ne peut pas être laissé pour compte par l’autre dans cette épreuve de l’élaboration du souvenir. Le travail de mémoire implique ainsi toujours une construction discursive du souvenir qui appelle à être examinée. En ce sens, l’archéologue, l’historien et le thérapeute, tantôt apportent les conditions pour rendre possible cette construction, tantôt l’interrogent. Or, l’essentiel du travail de mémoire se joue, du point de vue du thérapeute, dans les positions successives que le sujet adopte vis-à-vis du souvenir à chaque remémoration.Conclusion : Le travail de remémoration à travers l’écriture engage le sujet, à travers son corps pulsionnel, dans une construction de la trace grâce à laquelle il peut préserver son intégrité face à la catastrophe. Il peut par ce moyen se souvenir non pas pour « oublier », mais pour se délester d’avoir à porter en lui seul les traces de l’irreprésentable traumatique
