Bodhisattva: probably Padmapani, rayed nimbus, sandals on feet

A number of Hellenistic features are present in a Bodhisattva now preserved in the British Museum, The hair, loose and flowing, is in keeping with 'Apollo' imagery as are the western sandals: a feature of clothing always missing from sacred sculpture elsewhere in India, Stocky proportions characterize the body, and the rayed numbus indicates further borrowings from Mathuran sculpture, At this later period, the late 3rd century, even the careful juxtaposition of geometric versus natrualistic areas has broken down a good deal so that the figure looks like a western statue clothed in native costume and fitted with a Buddha-like face, It is an example of the less accomplished end of the artistic scale from the Ghandaran period and is not making the best use of the typical features of Ghandaran art, -- London, British Museum
