Indus Valley: The Graffiti on ceramics, continued

Group 1) Goat, deer, highly-conventionalized human forms on a sherd are almost similar to the pictographs representing man on Indus seals, Birds & perhaps duck, Group 2) Svastika and cross on seals from Lothal, Harappa and Mohenjodaro, A cross with a circle or dot at each end, and arrows radiating from a point, sun-spoked wheel appear to be forerunners of same symbols on punch-marked coins, A mounted boar reminiscent of Indus seal signs, Group 3) Combinations of linear signs, A lid from Period IIA shows seven signs, A potsherd from Lothal has five signs, It is clear that some of the linear signs noticed on the Indus seals continued to be used in later times also, Suggested that large number encountered on seals was reduced in Periods IIC and II of Rangpur and in Lothal B, Pictographs such as the scorpion, fish and bird were dropped, Writing appears to have been made easy by limited [sic] the numbers to about 40 basic linear signs
