Mobile radio communications in Alaska are not always effective along our highways, marine system, and remote field sites. This ineffective mobile radio communications coverage is due in part to the lack of repeaters in appropriate locations and an excess of users on certain frequencies. Lower frequencies can propogate over hilly areas whereas higher frequencies tend to travel in straight lines and are shielded by hills, ridges, and tall buildings. A new communications system called Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) may be available for use in the State in three or four years.
