Négoce, espaces et politique : les recompositions socio-économiques du commerce dauphinois dans la Révolution (années 1770 - années 1820)

This thesis aims to study the impact of the revolutionary process on the organization of preindustrial trade, through the example of merchants (négociants) from Dauphiné and their international business relations (in European, Mediterranean and Caribbean regions). To analyse these changes, the investigation begins with examinate the trade structures in Dauphiné, at the end of Ancien Régime. The boundaries of the group are much more uncertain that it seems at first: the cohesion of commercial bourgeoisie is mainly due to the rule of a few families, able to speak on behalf of the other tradesmen, and to impose their patriotic and (seemingly) “liberal” line. The Revolution, in which these merchants are involved, initiates a deep remodelling of public and institutional space, that partly meets their expectations, but that isn’t without risk: revolutionary dynamics also contribute to destabilizing the group, in the short run. But in the longer term, socioeconomic, political or symbolic transformations promote the expansion of the merchants. The traders benefit in particular from French Wars to develop their functions in the economic and political sphere, officially serving the common interest. From this point of view, the Revolution results are quite paradoxical. On the one hand, the merchants strengthen their social influence; but on the other hand, this only car occur through a transformation of their collective identity: this change involves in particular a reorientation of their traditional activities and a redefinition of commercial field.Cette thèse vise à étudier l’impact du processus révolutionnaire sur l’organisation du négoce préindustriel, à travers l’exemple des commerçants dauphinoise et de leurs réseaux d’affaires internationaux (Europe, Méditerranée, Caraïbes). Pour analyser ces mutations, l’enquête commence par revenir sur les structures du négoce dauphinois, vers la fin de l’Ancien Régime. Les contours du groupe semblent beaucoup plus incertains qu’il n’y paraît : la cohésion de la bourgeoisie d’affaires tient surtout à la prééminence de quelques familles, capables de s’exprimer au nom des autres commerçants locaux et de porter ainsi une ligne patriote et apparemment « libérale ». La Révolution, dans laquelle ces négociants s’impliquent, ouvre une phase de recomposition de l’espace public et institutionnel, qui répond en partie à leurs attentes, mais qui ne va pas sans risque. Les dynamiques révolutionnaires contribuent en effet à déstabiliser le groupe à court terme. A plus long terme, en revanche, se déroulent des mutations socio-économiques, politiques et symboliques propices à l’essor de la bourgeoisie commerciale. Celle-ci tire notamment profit des conflits internationaux, sous la Révolution et l’Empire, pour réaffirmer ses fonctions dans la sphère économique et publique, au service de l’effort de guerre et de l’intérêt général. De ce point de vue, le bilan de la Révolution se révèle quelque peu paradoxal. D’un côté, les négociants renforcent leur puissance sociale ; mais de l’autre, ils n’y parviennent qu’au prix d’une transformation de leur identité collective, qui passe en particulier par une réorientation de leurs activités traditionnelle et par une redéfinition du champ commercial
