De la valeur emblématique des dromadaires en terre cuite d'Égypte

International audienceThe aim of this paper is to obtain new information from a well-known source material: Egyptian terracotta dromedaries of Graeco-Roman era. For this purpose, the sociological significance identified for similar figurine types will be put to the test. These animal figurines are the best represented type in terracotta in this period, although they played only a very restricted role in pre-Hellenistic Egypt, or were even practically absent. The correct reading of these "œuvrettes" enables us to complement our knowledge of the socio-cultural perceptions of such objects’ consumers living on Egyptian soil, given that approaches that already have been used with profit for the study of Greco-Roman coroplastic have also been applied here.Besides, this study wants to show that it is pertinent to take into consideration the point of view of the Greek, and later, the Roman culture; disregarding it and presuming a timelessness of the Egyptian mentality – the latter widely supplied by scholars with the most sophisticated religious elements –, would undoubtedly distort the analysis of these terracottas. The cultural or archaeological contexts, although frequently mentioned as uncertain or even unknown, justify challenging this earlier tendency: it should be noted that the share of animal terracottas discovered in temples of the Egyptian chora is almost nil, while large numbers have been found in Greek or "Hellenized" domestic contexts. In other words, establishing in concrete terms their meaning and use in the Graeco-Roman sphere helps in understanding the social groups which produced and handled these objects. One has to take into account their way(s) of thinking "objectively" in order to grasp the additional significance of certain stereotypical animal figures.La présente communication a pour objet d’obtenir des données nouvelles à partir d’une documentation connue, celle des dromadaires en terre cuite d’Égypte ; pour ce faire, seront mises à l’épreuve les valeurs sociologiques dégagées pour des types de figurines similaires et parmi les plus représentés en terre cuite, alors qu’avant l’époque hellénistique, ceux-ci occupaient en Égypte une place particulièrement circonscrite ou y étaient quasi étrangers. La lecture de ces « oeuvrettes » est à même de renouveler la perception que nous avons des conceptions socioculturelles de leurs consommateurs présents sur le sol égyptien, cela pour autant que nous suivions les démarches fructueuses engagées depuis plusieurs années maintenant pour l’étude de la coroplathie gréco-romaine. Par ailleurs, cette étude voudrait souligner que se priver des points de vue propres aux sphères culturelles grecques puis romaines communes à l’Égypte, à la seule invocation de la pérennité d’une mentalité égyptienne largement nourrie par les commentateurs d’éléments religieux parmi les plus savants, ne peut que biaiser leur examen. Les contextes de découvertes, bien qu’il soitrégulièrement fait mention de leur fragilité, voire de leur méconnaissance, accréditent la remise en cause de ce penchant analytique. Il n’est que de rappeler la part quasi nulle des terres cuites animales retrouvées dans les temples de la campagne égyptienne et leur grand nombre découvert dans les contextes domestiques grecs ou « hellénisés ». En d’autres termes, établir concrètement leur signification/usage gréco-romain(e) n’enlève rien à l’intérêt que ces terres cuites d’Égypte revêtent pour comprendre la société/les groupes sociaux qui les ont produites et manipulées ; reconnaître « objectivement » dans ces dernières certains stéréotypes figuratifs animaliers ne peut qu’aider à révéler les modes de pensée corollaires
