AbstractIn this paper, we give a characterization of countable compacta which admit expansive homeomorphisms. The main result is the following:Theorem. Let X be a countable compactum and d(X)=α, where d(X) is the derived degree of X. Then X admits an expansive homeomorphism if and only if α is not a limit ordinal number
