Effects of protein and amino acid diets in chronically uremic and control rats. Nutritional status and evidence for uremic toxicity were assessed in chronically uremic and sham-operated male Sprague-Dawley rats that were tube-fed isocaloric diets which contained one of the following sources of nitrogen: ty: a) 15% casein (15% CAS); b) a mixture of 7.8% essential and 6.6% nonessential amino acids (14.4% MAA); c) 14.7% essential amino acids (14.7% EAA) or d) 7.8% essential amino acids (7.8% EAA), which were estimated to provide 1.2 times the minimum requirement of essential amino acids for maximum growth in healthy rats.
