Australia's strong historical foundation in stem cell science was boosted in 2002 by the formation of a virtual government-supported institute now called the Australian Stem Cell Centre. However, the inevitable “brain drain” and government and community expectations of quick commercial gains and rapid cures necessitate careful reconsideration of the identity and future of stem cell science in Australia
