Although the nuclear vitamin D receptor (VDR) is involved in the control of keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation by its ligand 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3[1,25(OH)2D3[, its role in epidermal physiology remains poorly understood. Because VDR abundance reflects cellular responsiveness to 1,25(OH)2D3, we investigated VDR expression in cultured human keratinocytes and identified cell anchorage and cytoskeletal integrity as essential requirements for the maintenance of VDR levels.
