Teaching Interpreting

AbstractBeing a highly communicative instance of translation interpreting requires a communicative/functional/context sensitive approach. Thus, the interpreting student should be made aware that interpreting is a commissioned task whose legitimate skopos/purpose is to make communication possible. The meaning to be rendered i.e. the optimal translation is seen as a function of the communication situation, to be found beyond words, in a “deverbalized” state. Interpreting students should be trained to assume that interpreting presupposes some infidelity or manipulation and that one important interpreting job requirement is that of training speakers to take some responsibility for the interpreting performance
