Vitamin D stimulation of the sodium pump, which requires genomic action of the sterol, may lead to enhanced Ca2+ extrusion via a basolateral Na+/Ca2+ exchange mechanism, and, in addition, may provide a proliferative signal in undifferentiated enterocytes
