AbstractIndividuals often apply the sociolinguistic norms of their primary language to the patterns of response in a second language. The purpose of this study is to assess the compliment responses of native and non-native Turkish ELT students in North Cyprus. The data is collected through the use of written discourse completion tasks (DCT), with a set of six different scenarios in which the students are asked to respond to specific compliments. Six native and six non-native Turkish ELT students participated in the study.Theresultsshowedthat, therewassignificantdifference in English complimentstrategiesbetweennative and non-native Turkish ELT students
