AbstractGlobal existence of a 2 × 2 system of nonstrictly hyperbolic conservation laws is established for data in L∞. This system is a particular case in a canonical class of conservation laws with an isolated umbilic point (a point in the state space where strict hyperbolicity fails). The proof uses compensated compactness to obtain the convergence of the viscosity method and involves a detailed analysis of the entropy functions which can become singular near the umbilic point
