This chapter discusses the role of institutions, both formal and informal, inecosystem governance. The role of different forms of knowledge, and theways in which these can be combined, are analysed, as is the role of civilsociety in ecosystem policy processes. Organisational structures, theiraims, norms and values, are examined and the problems of cooperation between different institutional cultures are analysed. The chapter presents anumber of Trialogues in the context of sustainability, epistemology, andpolicy processes, and discusses their relevance for ecosystem governance.Finally, a number of recommendations for future research are made
