AbstractThis article considers social service interpreting as a special type of interpreting and differentiates the notions for denoting this type. The main task is to reveal principal conditions for the establishment of an effective institution of social service interpreting and problems, the resolution of which provides society with access to social service interpreting. Analysis of the role and tasks of community interpreter is based on the surveys of Estonian Police and Border Guard Board. Such specifics of this type of interpreting as professional, social status, psychological and linguistic asymmetry are the focus of this article
