AbstractPurpose: Kinks and coils of the extracranial carotidartery system have been described in conjunction with atherosclerotic disease of the internal carotid artery. The purpose of this study was to determine whether adding a carotid artery shortening procedure to carotid endarterectomy affected perioperative mortality and stroke-morbidity rates or late restenosis.Methods: A retrospective chart review of all patients who concurrently underwent carotid endarterectomy and ipsilateral carotid artery shortening between 1983 and 1992 was performed.
