The role of Angiotensin in the cardiovascular and renal response to salt restriction. Dietary sodium restriction in rabbits resulted in a significant reduction in cardiac output: blood pressure was well maintained through an increase in total peripheral resistance. Renal blood flow, measured with tagged microspheres, and glomerular filtration rate were reduced with salt restriction. There was a larger reduction in outer cortical than inner cortical flow rates. Blockade of the renin-angiotensin system with either a competitive antagonist to angiotensin II (1-sar, 8-ala angiotensin II) or inhibition of converting enzyme (SQ 20881) reduced arterial pressure in animals on a low salt diet but not on a high salt diet.
