AbstractBackgroundThe role of antibiotic prophylaxis in preventing post-operative complications in patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery is well established. Despite evidence that a single-dose prophylaxis is sufficient, the duration of antibiotic use in clinical practice is highly variable and surveys have identified persistent patterns of antibiotic abuse in elective colorectal surgery.Materials and methodsWe conducted a retrospective review of all patients who underwent elective colorectal surgery between 1998 and 2002 at the American University of Beirut Medical Center.
