AbstractA screening monitoring campaign of volatile organic compounds (VOC) was conducted in the main cities of the metropolitan area of Bari, south-eastern Italy, in order to evaluate the impact of the vehicular traffic on the urban air quality. VOC were sampled with diffusive samplers suitable for thermal desorption. The monitoring was planned considering the number of inhabitants and the intensity of the vehicular traffic in each city. The same concentration pattern and the correlation among benzene versus toluene levels in all sites confirmed the presence of a single source, the vehicular traffic, having a strong impact on urban air quality
