Continuously regenerating stratified squamous epithelia form an interesting model for examining mechanisms controlling the balance between rates of cell formation and cell maturation and death. Previous investigations of epidermal metabolism have been mainly based on single enzyme assays which may not form a reliable guide to changing rates of flux through metabolic path-ways.
