AbstractAn element S of an algebra is called single if ASB = 0 implies AS = 0 or SB = 0. For many algebras of operators, S is single if and only if S has rank one. Here we study properties of single operators not of rank one, and conditions on the algebra which will ensure that all its single operators are of rank one
