A Conceptual Model for Achieving Global Quality in Engineering Educational Institutions in India

AbstractIndian technical institutions are striving to produce an adequate number of engineering graduates required by the industry. However, the potential for upgrading the quality of the average Indian technical graduates remains to be harnessed. The duty of the institutions is to develop the students to face global standards and digital world successfully. The entire world has become a global village and the level of operational and competitive requirements have risen to world class and globally competitive status. Total quality management (TQM) has been widely considered as the strategic, tactical and operational tool in the quality management research field. It is one of the most applied and well accepted approaches for business excellence besides Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), Six Sigma (DMAIC methodology), Lean Thinking, and Knowledge Management approaches and others, which are now being tried in the service sector of education also. In this paper, The authors proposed a conceptual model of Integrated Educational Quality Management Systems (IEQMS) that is nothing but a bundle of global management practices such as Knowledge Management, ISO 9001:2008 QMS, ISO 14001:2000 EMS, Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSAS 18001:2007), Lean Management, Six-Sigma (DMAIC methodology), and TQM concepts. The end result of Integrated Global Management Systems is to meet out the customers (i.e. Parents/Industry owners) expectation as well as improve the wealth of institution. The aim of this paper is to discuss the Integrated Educational Quality Management System (IEQMS) and its implementation for achieving global quality in engineering educational institutions in India
