Abnormalities in homocysteine metabolism have been suggested as risk factors for stroke and myocardial infarction. In retrospective studies, elevated levels of total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) and/or methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) 677C>T polymorphism have indicated an increase in risk.
