94. How relative risk of cancer from consanguinity and consanguinity rate affect number of cancer cases in United Arab Emirates

AimMarriage between relatives is common in many countries of the world. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), 50% of all marriages are consanguineous. Consanguinity increases chances of gene homozygousity, and homozygousity of cancer-susceptibility genes was shown to increase risk of leukemias and carcinomas. In epidemiological reports from Asia, Europe and North America, cancer cases were more common in offspring of consanguineous than nonconsanguineous parents. In native UAE population there were 314 new cancer cases in 2000, and the risks of cancer and leukemia are significantly higher among consanguineous families compared to nonconsanguineous ones (RR=1.53 and 1.66, respectively).
