AbstractWhat was the extent of women's interest in and practice of mathematics in Britain in the 18th century? The evidence from the Ladies' Diary, recently given by T. Perl (Historia Mathematica 6 (1979), 36–53), is extended, and other sources of information, particularly subscription lists, are discussed. The examples given show that interest was still at a high level at the end of the century. However, more work is needed as a basis for reliable conclusions
