AbstractSurfactant protein C (SP-C) is a hydrophobic lipopeptide that is critical for lung function, in part because it physically catalyzes the formation of surface-associated surfactant reservoirs. Many of SP-C's key biophysical properties derive from its highly stable and hydrophobic α-helix. However, SP-C's posttranslational modification with N-terminal palmitoyl chains also seems to be quite important.
