AbstractThis paper explore the role that body image plays in the psychopathology of eating disorders, from dissatisfaction in one extreme of the continuum through distortion at the other end, its incidence as a risk factor in the generation of the disorder and as a relapse predictor. Highlights the relevance of the social construction of body image and hence, the need for consideration of contextual factors for its understanding and for the design of specific treatment interventions. Emphasizes the importance of body image disturbances as a hard core of psychopathology, as a maintenance factor, and indicator for prognosis.
