ESCs undergo drastic changes in chromatin states during differentiation. Two recent papers in Cell (Li et al., 2012) and Cell Stem Cell (Hu et al., 2013) demonstrate that histone variant H2A.Z plays essential roles in this process by preconfiguring nucleosomes for depletion and recruiting transcription cofactors to cis-regulatory elements
