Hypertension is the most prevalent risk factor for stroke, myocardial infarction, or end-stage renal failure. The critical importance of excess salt intake in the pathogenesis of hypertension is widely recognized, but the mechanisms whereby salt intake elevates blood pressure have puzzled researchers.
