AbstractThe review is dedicated to recent progress in the study of peroxisomal membrane permeability to solutes which has been a matter of debate for more than 40 years. Apparently, the mammalian peroxisomal membrane is freely permeable to small solute molecules owing to the presence of pore-forming channels. However, the membrane forms a permeability barrier for ‘bulky’ solutes including cofactors (NAD/H, NADP/H, CoA, and acetyl/acyl-CoA esters) and ATP. Therefore, peroxisomes need specific protein transporters to transfer these compounds across the membrane.
