AbstractThe ability of the simian immunodeficiency virus SIVsmmPBj14 (SIV-PBj14) to activate and induce proliferation of quiescent peripheral blood lymphocytes from macaques is anin vitrocorrelate of its acutely lethalin vivophenotype. SIV-PBj14 differs from other SIV strains by encoding tyrosine at amino acid 17 (Y17) in Nef, which generates an activation motif important for signal transduction. Although intravenous inoculation of pig-tailed macaques with SIV-PBj14 uniformly leads to death within 2 weeks, inoculation by mucosal routes results in persistent infections that progress to AIDS.
